Amtrak’s Empire Builder #7 & #8 Amtrak’s Empire Builder does not have the allure that the Great Northern’s Empire Builder had with its Great Domes and round-end observation cars, but it is one of Amtrak’s busiest trains. Westbound #7 arrives in Seattle in the mid-morning making for easy photography west of the Cascades, in the late-spring to fall seasons.
On rare occasions #7 will be late, which will permit getting photos on the east side of the state. Eastbound #8 departs Seattle in the early evening, around 4:45pm making photography difficult except for the summer months. The two trains will pass each other somewhere between Spokane and Sandpoint, ID between 1 and 2am.
